Wattstax - Friday, August 17th

WMNF brings back the cult favorite documentary of the Wattstax festival, directed by Mel Stuart. On August 20, 1972, seven years after the Watts riots, the legendary Stax recording label staged a benefit concert in Los Angeles with over 100,000 people showing up to commemorate the events of seven years earlier. As time went by, it became known as the Black Woodstock - a historic coming together of politics, music and the new Black consciousness. Soul, blues, and gospel were in full effect with outtasight performances from the Staple Singers, Albert King, Little Milton, Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas and many more.
